General Information on Moose Jaw

Moose Jaw, located in south-central Saskatchewan, is the fourth largest city in the province with a population of just over 34,000 people. Moose Jaw sits along the Moose Jaw River, just west of Regina, and is best known as a retirement and tourist city.

Moose Jaw is the hub to the hundreds of small towns and farms in the surrounding region. There are a number of tourist and roadside attractions. Agriculture, large capacity concrete grain terminals, meat-processing plants, salt, potash, urea fertilizer, and ethanol producers are all key industries for the Moose Jaw economy. Its location just off the Trans-Canada highway contributes to its lively economy, as it is easy to transport its products.

Alcohol Addiction and Abuse in Moose Jaw

According to a Saskatchewan government report, the province has the highest rate of alcohol dependence, with about 4 percent of the population or 31,000 persons aged 15 years and older, and alcohol abuse, with 8.5 percent or 64,000 persons aged 15 years and older.

Overall, the rate of substance abuse, including alcohol addiction, is highest in the Aboriginal population of Saskatchewan. As well, within the Aboriginal population, first use of a substance occurs at a younger age than other population groups. Homeless and street-involved people in Saskatchewan have very high rates of drug and alcohol abuse. Furthermore, this population is difficult to engage in treatment and frequently present multiple problems. In 2002-03, approximately 16 percent of admissions to addiction treatment services were young people aged under the age of 19. As such, the Saskatchewan government identified four groups to target with their efforts: youth, aboriginal people, the street-involved, and northern residents.
