General Information for Brandon, Manitoba

Brandon, MB, also known as “The Wheat City”, is located in southwestern Manitoba. With a population of approximately 51,500 residents it is the second largest city in the province. Originally a major junction on the Canadian Pacific railway, it is now a major hub for the surrounding agricultural area.

All of the major industries in Brandon, MB are still connected to the agriculture industry, especially fertilizer and hog processing plants. Retail and government services remain other major economic sectors.

Alcohol Addiction and Drug Abuse in Brandon

The Addictions Foundation of Manitoba (AFM) conducts an annual prevalence survey, in which they survey 6,673 randomly selected students from across the province. AFM has found that close to 75 percent of all Manitoban students have consumed alcohol in their lifetime. Furthermore, this rate is much lower in the earlier grades, with 39 percent of boys and 28 percent of girls in grade 7 having consumed alcohol, and climbs steeply with each grade. By Senior 2, 80 percent of all students have tried alcohol, and 90 percent of students by graduation.

According to the Canadian Community Epidemiology Network of Drug Use (CCENDU), 11 percent of Manitoban students drink once or more a week, although this rate decreases in the lower grades. Of this group, about 52 percent of boys and 51 percent of girls started their drinking before the age of 15. Furthermore, overall their consumption levels are much higher than those students who did not begin consuming alcohol until they were 15 years or older.

Over 25 percent of Grade 7 students in Manitoba are current drinkers. About 80 percent of Senior 4 students are current drinkers.

The Addictions Foundation of Manitoba (AFM) also found that marijuana was the next most used substance in the province. Overall, there are relatively high usage rates across all Canadian youths. In Manitoba, by Senior 1 over 25% of all students have tried the drug. This climbs to approximately one-third of students by Senior 3 and almost half by the end of high school.

At Sobriety.ca Foundation, we keep up-to-date on all the latest drug use and alcohol addiction research so that we can offer the best addiction treatment programs possible. New research allows us a better understanding of drug and alcohol addiction, resulting in better counselling, treatment, aftercare, and, ultimately, a more successful recovery process for you.
