Is it time for YOU to make the call?
Addiction is a tricky, ongoing, and often dangerous issue. Acting quickly and directly can get to the root of the problem before it gets worse or becomes lethal. While it’s sometimes hard to gauge the degree of a problem, taking stock and trying to get answers and guidance is often the most cautious approach. If you’re dealing with a serious challenge, it is time, to make the call.
Stress Does Drive People To Drink
Famously people often drink to cope with stress. But when stresses become heavy and constant, drinking can quickly turn into a dangerous spiral. Does alcohol relieve stress? Studies show that briefly, drinking can sometimes provide people with a sense of stress relief. However, the side effects of drinking quickly make those stresses worse, sometimes plunging the person into a dangerous feedback loop. The person thinks they need more alcohol to compensate for greater stress and they soon enter a spiral of increased stress and alcohol.
A 2011 study at the University of Chicago demonstrated that stress changes the way alcohol affects people. People who were stressed just before drinking in the study had stronger cravings for alcohol. Meaning stress compounds the urge to drink.
“If you have acute stress,” said Emma Childs, a behavioral pharmacology researcher at the University of Chicago. “Then at some point, you learn to come home and have a glass of wine or a drink — it becomes a learned response. It’s going to increase your risk for stress-related disorders including alcohol and drug addiction.”
