At Sobriety.ca Foundation, we know that addicts are not the only ones negatively impacted by Substance and Alcohol use disorders, friends and family members are also affected. That is why we provide addiction treatment services. A loved one’s drug and alcohol addiction can tear a family apart , and while you may have tried everything in your power to stop your loved one from steadily destroying themselves, it may seem that no matter how hard you’ve tried, nothing works. This is an all too familiar story, however once you and your loved one make the critical turning point decision to reach out to our intake team the healing can begin.
Let us help you guide this process.
Our addiction counselors start by helping you arrange a professional interventionist, usually, we can find someone close to your home. While not always needed when it is the services of a professional interventionist help you stage a calm and productive intervention, supporting your family can help your affected loved one see how their actions are impacting everyone, and as a part of the service, he or she will also guide your loved one to an appropriate alcohol, drug addiction treatment facility that provides quality care.
Family, Couple, and Individual Counselling
There will come a time during your loved one’s recovery process when it may become necessary to participate in family counseling, couple counseling, and/or individual counseling sessions. By participating in your loved one’s therapeutic process you will not only be helping them heal from drug or alcohol addiction but you also will benefit. During your sessions, an addiction counsellor or psychotherapist can teach you about alcohol and drug addiction as well as what to expect when your loved one returns home. During family counseling or couple sessions, the addict and their loved ones can learn to re-establish communication that was lost and to mend broken relationships. In addition, they teach family members about how to live again for themselves without being overly preoccupied with the recovering addict. What this does is break the cycle of co-dependency and establish boundaries to prevent any reoccurring behaviors that may lead toward relapse.
Tools that help mend relationships
Restorative Justice revolves around practical methods of resolving conflict. The sessions are goal-oriented, working to create mutual understanding and empathy between all parties. During sessions, each party recounts their version of a particular event, theft, destruction of property, etc. Each party explains the reasons behind their conduct, the impact of the event on their life, and the emotions surrounding it.
Counselors mediate, assisting in developing and reaching the resolution goals, ultimately arriving at a mutually beneficial and satisfactory agreement. When all parties involved fulfill this agreement, trust is rebuilt, and closure is attained. Restorative Justice sessions act as a means to take responsibility for our actions and to make appropriate amends.
