Few things can put a strain on a committed relationship or marriage more than when one partner has an addiction to alcohol or drugs. Addition can break trust and possibly tear up the entire family.

Look at the signs.

Before you jump to any conclusions it helps to be able to identify some classic signs and symptoms of addiction. They may include:

  • Drinking or using throughout the day – in the morning or during work and other socially unacceptable times.
  • Strongly denies that there is a problem, even with evidence to the contrary.
  • Performance suffering at school or work as a consequence
  • Sudden mood swings and becoming more irritable when not high or drinking.

Co-dependent Relationships and Addiction

One of the biggest disputes that face many couples where one partner has an addiction is the issue of co-dependency. This can manifest as the nonaddicted partner being unable to confront the other because they fear that their relationship will get worse. In extreme cases, addiction and depression increase and the relationship completely breaks down. What is essential in an addiction-driven co-dependent relationship is for one person to get help.

Getting Help for Your Partner/Spouse

If any of the situations stated above apply to your relationship and situation, this is the time to get treatment for your spouse. For some couples, this may be easier said than done. You may need to hold an intervention, especially if you have confronted them and threatened to leave if they did not seek treatment.

An intervention is an organized meeting where family members and close friends come together to express their concerns and tell the addicted individual how their behavior is affecting everyone. If you decide to proceed it is best to contact a professional interventionist to assist in the process and attend the meeting to make sure it is productive and safe.

It is always best to prepare in advance whenever possible for an intervention because once an intervention has been completed, the individual should immediately enter a treatment program.
Once they enter a residential rehab, everyone affected can begin to receive the necessary help they need from addiction professionals. Through detox, individual, group, and family counseling sessions, your spouse will learn how to regain control of their life.
