Residential or “inpatient” substance and alcohol use disorder rehabilitation is the most effective, and comprehensive way to combat addiction. On this page, you will find answers to the most frequently asked questions about residential rehab. If you would like to learn more about our inpatient detox and addiction treatment program, contact Sobriety.ca Foundation, Canada’s premier alcohol rehab located a short drive from Ottawa at 1-888-999-8101.

It is important to be mindful that when you are choosing a residential rehab for yourself, emotionally, you may not be at your best. Deciding to enter Rehab can be one of the most intimidating and difficult things you have done for yourself, and often you will have some underlying issues that have to be addressed as well. To assist you through this difficult process, Sobriety.ca Foundation has gathered some of the most popular questions we get when people contact us about beginning their journeys to recovery.

Sobriety.ca Foundation is a small residential alcohol drug rehab treatment center located in the serene countryside a short drive from Ottawa. We offer individualized addiction treatment programs in an environment that is conducive to rest, relaxation and recovery. If you have questions about whether you or a loved one may need treatment please call our call us at 1-888-999-8101 and speak with one of our addiction specialists.

Everything starts with a detailed intake procedure. This is your chance to open up with the addiction counselors and medical team about the details of your self medicating, and to bring up any concurrent disorders you are aware of, it is also a good time to identify what goals and aspirations are for treatment.

If you experience withdrawal symptoms you may begin with detox.  After you complete the detox portion, you will begin to work on the psychological component which includes different therapies: one-on-one personal therapy with an addictions counselor or psychotherapist, group therapy sessions, outdoor and adventure therapies, art therapies, and alternative treatments like yoga and meditation which are all designed to help you recover and rediscover your true self without the burdens of addictions.

Residential rehab allows you to undergo a more intensive process, , because you are away from your home, you are more focused on identifying and healing the issues that caused your dependency.

An outpatient rehab program usually offers therapy, educational classes, and group sessions during the day and allows you to go.

While this may seem to be ideal, and less intense it is frequently more difficult and will take longer for a full recovery. This is because there will be opportunities to relapse into old patterns when confronted with “triggers.”

This is a personal question that only you can answer. If you are convinced that you will not relapse during treatment, or don’t experience withdrawal symptoms when you stop using or drinking, and you have home and job obligations to fulfill, then an outpatient alcohol rehab may be right for you.

If you however experience physical withdrawal symptoms when you stop drinking or using, you should seek an inpatient rehabilitation center where medical assistance and care are present to prevent complications.

Furthermore, when you are concerned about relapse an inpatient rehabilitation program is best for you because this is the safest option.

And frequently we see that even those with work and home obligations find a full and lasting recovery is only viable when they immerse themselves in the process. For most people, residential rehab is the most reliable route from their place of pain and addiction to return to their whole and healthy selves again.

We receive phone calls and listen to people who are far more interested in programs that have less time and commitment. Many prefer to choose an outpatient rehab facility because of fewer obligations at lower costs. They expect to “get away” by incorporating an addiction treatment program into their hectic work or life schedule, a task that will not be as easy as they imagine.
At the end of the day full-time immersion in a fully rounded personalized addiction treatment program will yield much better results, often quicker as well. When you commit to a residential program you can focus solely on your recovery with no outside temptations and distractions.

Remember it took time to fully integrate drugs or alcohol into your life, and it will take time , structure, and dedication to get it back out again.

Being truthful and objective when you look into the signs and symptoms of addiction can help determine the necessity of rehab. Have you had a recent physical and your physician confronted you about health problems that were attributed to your alcohol or substance use?

Have you missed work and maybe also are facing the possibility of losing your job because of this dependence? Or worse have you already lost a job or a career because of the unhealthy burden of addiction?
Has your spouse let you know that your behavior while intoxicated is unacceptable? Do you continue regardless of people confronting you on your behaviors?

If you answered yes to the questions you should seek rehab.

Yes, for many of our residents, their friends, families, and loved ones were also suffering from the burden of addiction and they too will require help with recovery. Our counselors help you to engage in meaningful dialogues with your family when you are ready. This may include family sessions where you and your loved one can address concerns and also educate them about the nature of addiction and what you are experiencing physically and emotionally so they can be compassionate and understanding as well as helpful through the therapeutic process.

This depends largely on the kind of insurance you carry.
For some their coverage is straightforward, for others, the process of finding the funds to pay for addiction treatment may be tricky.

Some common Myths and Misconceptions about Rehab

Facts: Rehab costs vary, some private rehab facilities pride themselves on being seen as luxury rehabs, and their pricing reflects this. Others are government-funded or partially funded by donation, their costs are of course much lower than the "luxury rehabs. Some of the immediate differences you may find between the two are shared or dorm-type rooms, vs, private ones. Immediate access vs longer wait lists. Larger patient-to-counselor ratios vs smaller resident-counselor ratios.

At Sobriety we take pride in being somewhere in the middle, we operate as a Not-for-profit facility and limit our intake to 12 residents at a time. this allows us to maintain a greater level of personalized attention for our residents.

We also offer all of our residents private rooms with ensuite baths but do not charge the significantly higher rates that the luxury rehabs do.

If you would like to learn more about the cost of attending Sobriety call and discuss your circumstances with a member of our intake team. We can offer assistance and advice with funding your stay.

Fact: Beware of "instant rehab" from any addiction treatment center. Most addiction treatment programs last 30 days or more some long-term rehabs can even last over a year. Residential rehab places a focus on getting residents clean and sober and then outfits them with the tools and skills to stay that way. This cannot be achieved overnight and requires dedication and commitment from the recovering addict. Commitment to anything worthwhile takes time and effort and rehab is no exception.

Fact: Detox only helps with the physical component of any addiction. The individual must then focus on the psychological components through individual and group counseling to help change the behaviors associated with their addiction. Residential rehab focuses on both the physical and psychological components of addiction.

While for some people detox is an important step, it is only the first step in the recovery process, not the final one.

Fact: There are advantages to entering a residential rehab,  in a residential rehab the residents are fully immersed in the process of recovery, and they can expect to receive 24/7 attention, care, and support. While the programs are very similar to outpatient care.
In an outpatient model though the individual is free to go home at the end of the day, both types of rehab are helpful ways to combat addiction, but to call one better than the other would be simply preposterous.

Residential rehab requires you to be all in for a set number of days, outpatient rehab can augment your day-to-day life offering you important therapies, programs and support during the recovery journey.

Fact: Not necessarily, in fact, many rehabs do not treat the dual diagnostic individual. This is why when seeking help for a dual-diagnosis individual you must learn what, if any treatment options are available that address this need. Dual diagnosis or concurrent disorder is a condition where an individual suffers from both a mental illness and an alcohol or drug addiction. This requires specialized care, a specialized program, and specially trained staff who have the skills to address this set of circumstances. Any rehab that treats dual diagnosis has a psychiatrist, nurse, and physician on staff as well as addiction counselors and psychotherapists.

Fact: While it is our job to ensure each resident who graduates from our recovery treatment programs is clean and sober and has discovered what led them to self-medicate in the first place that is only a part of the lifelong commitment they must make to themselves to stay the course.

Because leaving the rehab center and returning to life "outside" can be a daunting task we make sure each resident is fully prepared and has their exit plan firmly in hand.

We begin with continuing their therapist sessions for several weeks after they leave, we also provide them with access to a robust and inclusive series of Aftercare meetings, in fact, because we believe that the Aftercare process is such an important hinge-pin of success, introduce all residents into the community and show them the process of attending these Zoom meetings even before they leave.

Each resident on graduating leaves with the support of a like minded community they can turn to each day of the week. We augment these Aftercare meetings a one-to-one therapy sessions with open SMART recovery meetings, also held over Zoom and facilitated by counselors who are trained in both our Sobriety Method and the SMART recovery method.
