At Heritage Home, our alcohol rehab is not a “band-aid” solution. Our alcohol addiction treatment program helps those learn why they abuse alcohol and how to take control of their life and stop the suffering once and for all.

An alcohol rehab center is the first place for a supportive environment where healing can start. Heritage Home’s alcohol addiction treatment program helps our clients regain control of their lives by treating the mind, body and spirit.

What is an Alcohol Rehab?

Alcohol rehab helps individuals to overcome their physical and psychological addiction to alcohol in three distinct stages of treatment. The first stage would be alcohol detox followed by intensive counselling and then aftercare. Each stage is intended to treat a different component of addiction – the physical, psychological and social aspects of alcohol addiction.

The Primary Elements of Alcohol Rehab

Alcohol detox The first part of the recovery process. The detox process consists of ceasing all alcohol consumption. This gives the body the time it needs to cleanse itself from the harmful toxins associated with alcoholic beverages. This can be DANGEROUS if not professionally supervised and monitored by knowledgeable personnel in addiction treatment. Each individual may experience some or all of the withdrawal symptoms related with alcohol detox. The most common withdrawal symptoms are sweats or chills, depression and anxiety, severe mood swings or irritability and for the most severe cases of alcohol withdrawal; seizures, blackouts or DTs (delirium tremens). The withdrawal symptoms are pinnacle during the first few days of the detoxification process. Since each individual’s alcohol abuse varies, the alcohol detox process can last anywhere between a few days and up to two weeks and severities of the withdrawal process also vary.

Counselling The heart of any alcohol rehab program is counselling. During therapy sessions with a qualified addictions counsellor or psychotherapist, the client learns relapse prevention skills and about the dangers of alcohol abuse through psycho-educational workshops. This is very important because clients learn to identify their triggers that are characteristic towards patterns of unwanted behaviour or relapse.

Individual counselling. During individual sessions clients are able to explore the root causes that may have aggravated their alcohol dependence. These therapy sessions help clients learn new and healthy coping strategies away from alcohol.

Group counselling sessions are not only about sharing personal stories with one another. Group counselling teaches empathy that many benefit from and prevents isolation which is associated with alcohol abuse. In fact, most people who abuse alcohol admit that isolation is a major trigger.

Aftercare This is an essential component for alcohol addiction treatment. When someone finishes their alcohol rehab treatment, they return to the “outside world” and this is one of the most difficult steps in recovery. There are a great number of challenges that many face when they graduate from alcohol rehab. Stress, temptations and relationships are very complex and these obstacles alone can be overwhelming to those in recovery and they need all the support they can to help stay on the right track. They have to alter old unhealthy habits that trigger relapse.

To help tackle these nerve-racking situations, aftercare focuses on continuing with group support whether a local AA meeting or other group sessions provided by a health center AND individual counselling sessions with an addictions counsellor or psychotherapist.

Alcohol Rehab and Concurrent Disorders

In the past, many alcohol rehab programs only treated alcoholism without focusing on mental health issues. With addiction research, experts have found that the majority who come to alcohol rehab suffer from mental health problems. In fact, statistics conclude that 44% of alcohol abusers suffer from mental illness prior to alcoholism and many develop depression after the onset of addiction. A premier alcohol rehab center integrates treatment of mental health issues with alcohol rehabs to treat concurrent disorders.

Different Kinds of Alcohol Rehab

Alcohol rehab treatment programs are either outpatient or residential. Both do offer similar programs such as detox, counselling sessions and aftercare, but keep note that they are significantly different.

Outpatient Alcohol Rehab is where individuals attend treatment during the day and go either home or to a sober living environment (half way house) later in the evening. These types of treatment are better for those who have families with dependents that have to work or for students who are in school. This may be a good option for those who do not have a life threatening alcohol problem or that recognized an increase of alcohol consumption and want to take control before their new habits worsen.

Residential Alcohol Rehab is where individuals move into a facility and receive intensive care. Residential treatment centers are for those that want to focus more on alcohol addiction and the recovery process in a safe environment away from temptations with 24/7 services. This is vital for those with a very serious life threatening alcohol addiction

Heritage Home Foundation is a non-profit residential alcohol rehab treatment center located in Godmanchester, Quebec.
